Anxiety doesn’t go away just because it’s Christmas. For many people, it can in fact get worse at Christmas.
A survey by Deichmann in 2019 found that half of UK adults claim Christmas is the most stressful and anxiety-inducing time of year. So much so that 16% said they would rather do their tax return than attend a family Christmas!
f you are struggling, it's important to recognise your anxiety and try and maintain those behaviours that are healthy and change behaviours that could help reduce your anxiety over the Christmas period.
Take Breaks
This might be going for a walk, a run, or doing some Pilates. Whatever you enjoy and can help take your mind off Christmas.
Be Careful with Alcohol
Alcohol changes levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain, which can worsen anxiety. You may even feel more anxious after the alcohol wears off.*
Keep your Sleep Consistent
It's important to keep your sleep consistent as you can over Christmas. As sleep deprivation can often worsen anxiety, spurring a negative cycle involving insomnia and anxiety disorders.
